2014 BMW X5 (F15) SUV spy photos
Check out these spy photos of the upcoming third-generation 2014 BMW X5 SUV (code-named F15) wearing less camouflage than ever before. It will bring sleeker looks, lighter weight, more efficient engines, and more high tech to the luxury SUV nameplate.
Looking instantly recognizable, the model has a familiar appearance that shares styling cues with the X1 and X3. The camouflage hides a lot of details but we can see the crossover will have a prominent grille, ventilated front fenders and a dual exhaust system. The side-by-side photo also reveals the model will be significantly larger than its predecessor with sizeable gains in length and width.
Engine options remain unconfirmed but previous reports have indicated there could be a 2.0-liter diesel with 245 hp (183 kW), a 3.0-liter diesel with 302 hp (225 kW) and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 402 hp (300 kW).
The 2014 X5 is also likely to get an ActiveHybrid variant, with this model perhaps the best candidate for use of the turbocharged four-cylinder, since the electric hybrid drive system would help with low-end torque and the turbo four would deliver good cruising fuel economy. It could use a twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine and an electric motor for a combined output of 340 HP (250 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. On the other hand, the six-cylinder based system used in the ActiveHybrid 5 and even the smaller ActiveHybrid 3 might be a more natural fit.
As for powertrains, expect an eight-speed automatic transmission paired with a variety of turbocharged engines, including inline six-cylinder and V-8 units. A turbocharged four-cylinder is possible, as used in the new 528i, but perhaps unlikely given the X5′s still-greater mass.
The new X5 is expected to weigh less than the current X5 (the “X for All” platform which could enable it to weigh 150 kg (331 lbs)) and ride on a modified version of the F10 5 series chassis and continue being produced in BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant.
Other technologies might include self-leveling air suspension, night vision, park assist, traffic-sign recognition, and fuel-saving measures such as engine stop-start capability.
The 2014 BMW X5 is expected to be launched later this year, so look for a possible debut at an upcoming auto show. Take a look at more spy pics below:
