2014 Ford Fiesta SFE
The 2014 Ford Fiesta SFE (SFE stands for Super Fuel Economy) will be the automaker’s only subcompact car to surpass 40 mpg. It has been able to achieve 41 mpg in EPA testing.
Under the hood of the 2014 Fiesta SFE is a 1.6-liter gasoline engine that delivered 120 hp and the PowerShift automatic transmission, which makes this car pretty interesting and fun to drive. According to EPA we can expect to see 30 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined drive cycle. Compared to other subcompacts this is one with lowest fuel economy.
Ford said two key technologies help Fiesta achieve fuel economy leadership – its advanced aerodynamics and dry, dual-clutch PowerShift automatic transmission.
In terms of aerodynamics, the SFE package improves on the regular Fiesta’s economy thanks to aerodynamic tweaks both visible and underneath the car. It adds rear spoiler, side air deflectors, underbody shields, lower grille blockers, low-rolling-resistance tires and cruise control. Together, these features decrease the amount of fuel needed to push the car through the air at speed.
The second enabler is the PowerShift transmission. Unlike regular, hydraulically operated automatic transmissions that use power-sapping torque converters, wet clutches and pumps, Ford’s new dual-clutch PowerShift automatic consists of two manual transmissions – combined in the same case – working in parallel. Each has its own independent clutch unit controlled by computers, and fast-acting electromechanical actuators that shift the gears.
Equipment-wise, a new MyFord Touch system with 6.5-inch touch screen featuring enhanced voice control is now available. The Fiesta still features SYNC AppLink capabilities, which allow drivers to access and control Ford-approved smartphone apps with voice commands and vehicle controls while on the go.
Turn-by-turn navigation remains part of SYNC Services.
Ford MyKey is a new feature on the Fiesta, which enables parents to encourage safer driving and limit their teenagers’ exposure to risk at the wheel. The system allows owners to configure maximum speed and audio volume limits. It also mutes audio until seat belts are fastened and ensures driver aids, safety systems and more vigorous alerts cannot be deactivated when used.
Later this year, the SFE will be joined by another mileage maxer, a Fiesta fitted with the Ford’s award-winning 1.0-liter/3-cylinder EcoBoost engine that’s “expected to comfortably surpass 40 mpg,” according to the automaker.
Main competitors of this car are 2013 Nissan Versa that offers 1 mpg better combined fuel economy. Also 2013 Chevrolet Sonic comes with 33 mpg in combined drive cycle and for this result it uses 1.4 liter gasoline engine and manual transmission. If you are looking for an vehicle that brings even better fuel economy than you might be interesting in 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage that offers 37/44/40 mpg in city/highway/combine drive cycle. Another thing that drivers will look is the design of the car.
“The 2014 model is shaping up to be a game changer for Fiesta,” said Liz Elser, Ford Fiesta marketing manager. “With the addition of Fiesta ST and the award-winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost, we have fantastic performance and fuel efficiency. But with today’s news, buyers will have a fuel-efficient Fiesta no matter which they choose.”
Pricing for the 2014 Ford Fiesta SFE starts at $14,795.
