2015 Subaru WRX / WRX STI spy photos
2015 Subaru WRX Concept has been revealed at the 2013 New York Auto Show. The next model would branch from its humble Impreza origins into its own rally-bred four-door sports car and it would be more aggressive, with all the garish scoops and intakes all over its front. But now we have a spy photos of Subaru WRX that looks much tamer than concept car. Instead of the classy design shown in New York, we have something very typical of Subaru.
The development of new model is still ongoing and Subaru are doing their level best to keep the design to themselves. In the shots that you can see here, the car is so heavily camouflaged that it is hard to make out very much at all; but of course you can see some key features. It’s a chav-mobile fitted with a bonnet scoop, a tacky body kit, and a ginormous largely non-functional rear spoiler. As you may recall, the Subaru concept (image below), which was labeled as only a WRX, did not have a rear spoiler.
The STI’s styling will be clearly related to the standard Impreza with which it shares most of its body panels. The bonnet has a hole in it and is new, obviously, as are the front and rear bumpers – the latter housing quad pipes and a diffuser. Wider fenders covering larger wheels and trick suspension complete the package. Look closely and you’ll notice that the body kit isn’t too dissimilar to the one fitted to the current generation WRX STI.
New concept-inspired headlights can be seen below, along with new LED tail-lights, beefier bumpers at both ends and lightly flared guards. The familiar bonnet intake can also be seen below, feeding air to the top-mounted intercooler, while a large quad-exhaust arrangement is visible at the rear. Gone is the wide track, low-slung four-door coupe roof design, massive bumper intakes and pillar-mounted side mirrors.
A turbocharged version of the FA 2.0 litre boxer engine found in the BRZ/Toyota 86 twins is expected, with an output of about 300 horsepower – a 35 horsepower increase over the current model, but with a Subaru-specific direct injection system. The move from the current WRX’s 2.5 litre displacement is being driven by fuel economy and efficiency demands. In WRX form, outputs will be easily maintained at or above the current model’s 195kW/343Nm by combining the direct injection with more modern turbo technology. Unfortunately, the STI variant’s powertrain remains a mystery, but we assume it will carry the same 40-horsepower boost over the standard model.
Subaru’s next-generation WRX is expected to be revealed by the end of the year, but the Japanese automaker might opt to keep the STI model under wraps until 2014. We expect it to sport a higher price, likely justified by its separation from the workaday Impreza. Let’s just hope any bump is minor from the agreeable $26,565 sticker slapped on the current WRX.
