The new-generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive has been unveiled at the 2013 New York International Motor Show. No compromise to performance has happened at the expense of increasing environmental friendliness during the development process of this plug-in electric car.

Whilst maintaining the high standards of comfort, quality and safety that Mercedes customers expect, the 100kW electric motor will return maximum torque of 310 Nm, a top speed limited to 100 mph and a 0 to 60 mph time of less than 10 seconds, all without emitting any tailpipe emissions.

According to the NEDC cycle, the electric range is just under 125 miles, meaning that this electric vehicle can be used for shorter urban journeys as well as longer trips, and will cover most commuter distances. Recharging takes place from a standard domestic 3-pin charging socket – at 240V a two hour charge would return a driving range of around 60 miles.

While the car is on the move, the electric drive itself contributes to a favourable energy balance through recuperation, by converting kinetic energy into electric current in deceleration mode and during braking and feeding this energy into the battery.

A powerful lithium-ion battery feeds energy to an electric motor which powers the wheels to drive the car. The battery pack is is carefully positioned at the base of the vehicle, which means that space has been conserved and the B-Class remains a spacious five seater with generous luggage space.

Local emission-free electric vehicles such as the new B-Class Electric Drive are a major part of the Mercedes-Benz strategy for sustainable mobility that will be suitable for everyday use. Other electric vehicle developments include the A-Class E-CELL, the B-Class F-CELL, the Vito E-CELL van, and the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive. The Mercedes group have also produced over 1000 smart fortwo Electric Drive models that have been delivered globally since the middle of last year, with positive response.

The new B-Class Electric Drive will be available initially in the USA from the beginning of 2014, and will be launched in European markets subsequently.
